In-Vehicle Rehabilitation

What is "In-Vehicle Rehabilitation"?

"In-Vehicle Rehabilitation" is our in-house term for what is known in the psychology field as "Systematic Desensitization" ... a type of exposure therapy.

The strategy of "In-Vehicle Rehabilitation" is to slowly re-introduce a client to actual in-vehicle situations and traffic environments. Stress management techniques, relaxation strategies and safer, risk-free driving skills are taught and practiced during treatment sessions, according to a client's needs. These areas of exposure build and advance as a client progresses through the treatment program.

The constant objective throughout the program is to introduce strategies and techniques that will provide a client with the tools to lower their anxiety level to a steady and acceptance rating. This process is introduced as gradually as necessary, enabling a client to progress at their own pace and comfort level.

The recovery process will, inevitably and imperceptibly, evoke

traumatic memories with possible anxiety-ridden responses.

Re-writing these responses with neutral and positive responses, and,
above all, to do no harm, are the major goals of our program.

The Driving Therapist remains keenly attuned to the needs and conditions of a client during the treatment session (physical, mental and emotional). If a situation arises where a client cannot continue driving or sitting in the vehicle due to stress, pain, etc., a decision is taken immediately by the Driving Therapist to relieve the distress (i.e., by taking a "stress break", aborting the session, or trying another tactic in a different setting).

 THE FOCUS ...

to continue building up a client's resolve

until they are able to take the next step

                 in their own recovery process.

Promoting a client's sense of
   Control and Independence
is, in itself, quite freeing, as
Control
is naturally the opposite of
Anxiety.
